Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) constitute a spectrum of haeÂmatopoietic stem cell malignancies characterized by ineffective haematopoiesis, peripheral cytopenia, and increased risk of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Refractory anaemia is the presenting feature in approximately two-thirds of patients, with anaemia usually developing in the remainder as the disease progresses.
